4Runner, Hilux Surf, Hilux, Tacoma family cars are very convenient for elevators. Moreover, you can successfully elevator both the body above the frame (body lift) and any type of suspension – IFS, solid front axle, solid rear axle (suspension lift). For this purpose, it is possible to use both home-made parts, and many finished products from quite a large number of manufacturers, such as PERFORMANCE ACCESSORIES, TRAIL MASTER, SUPER LIFT, ARB (OLD MAN EMU), etc. It should be noted that none of the above-mentioned manufacturers produces body lift kits for vehicles with automatic transmissions. It is also specifically stated in the product descriptions that if the car is equipped with automatic transmission, body lift kits are not suitable for this car. Apparently, this is due to a rather thin gearshift mechanism on the automatic transmission, which the manufacturer does not want to be responsible for modification. If you want and have the opportunity, you will have to change the gearshift mechanism of the automatic transmission yourself. I will not stop at this question. I will just say that this process is not as simple as it seems.
The most simple, effective, and painless in technical and material sense type of elevator is Body Lift – that is, lifting the body over the frame. In this case, the center of gravity of the car does not move much upwards, and the stability of the car remains close to the factory parameters (the main weight is concentrated in the details of transmission and suspension, in the frame and engine – which remain at the same height). However, do not forget that the main purpose of any elevator is to install large-diameter wheels, which in turn leads to an overall lifting of the center of gravity. This increase in the center of gravity, as well as a slight increase caused by the body elevator, is well compensated by the track extension, which is also usually necessary when installing large and wide wheels. The use of the 3″ body elevator in combination with the originally large wheel arches of the 4Ranner and other cars of the family, gives a very good result – the ability to install wheels 33X12.5. The presence of such wheels in combination with the lightweight of the 4Ranner greatly improves the off-road ability of the car, so I will focus on this type of elevator in more detail.
It should be noted that the manufacturer does not always have the kits produced. If the set is not very popular and it is not in stock, the manufacturer can offer to issue a Factory order. In this case, the cost of the set, as a rule, does not change, but simply increases the delivery time.
Out of all kits for 4Runner on the market in 1994, I preferred a kit from Performance Accessories. This set seemed to me to be the most complete and correct, although the other sets (e.g. from Trail Master) are also very good. The product number is 5513M.
- 10 reinforced nylon spacers, extended stainless (galvanized) bolts for fastening the body to the frame of increased strength with special nuts and threaded adhesive.
- New galvanized (gold zinc) element of the hood compartment panel (firewall plate), changing the angle of the passage of the steering wheel Cardan; the extension of the steering Cardan itself;
- Galvanized (gold zinc) spacers for fixing the front bumper to the frame, extensions of the gearbox and handout levers; safety spacers for the luggage compartment.
- Galvanized (gold zinc) spacers with studs for lowering the radiator.
- Required bolts, nuts, washers, threaded glue, instructions.
With delivery from the U.S., the kit cost me 200 c.u. The delivery time to Moscow is 3 weeks. The installation of the set did not cause any serious difficulties. It is worth paying attention only to some details:
First, the length of the fuel tank neck tube was not enough. This may be due to the fact that the set is American and does not provide for installation on the diesel version of the model (4Runner with 1KZ-T engine). A new tube suitable for the diameter was selected. Also, the length of the rubber tube of the clutch working cylinder was not enough. We had to take the tube from the gasoline (3VZ-E) model – it (tube) was almost twice as long as the native 1KZ-T. It should be noted that in gasoline models the working cylinder is located on the passenger side of the clutch crankcase, on most diesel engines with the driver’s side (the scheme of the passenger-driver is taken for the left-hand drive car).
Secondly, it had to be carried with the elongated levers of the gearbox and RK, which began to “hit on each other. The solution to this problem is simple – it is necessary to bend them in the right direction. By the way, the possibility of such a problem was described in the instructions. Such concern for the manufacturer made me very happy.
In the end, there were some other little things – for example, one of the tubes of the heater was changed, somewhere the wiring fixtures were lengthened, etc. In general, this is a free creative work. The length of the brake tubes was enough. The coils were “played” a little bit.
After installing the body-lift kit, I began to select the necessary disks. The purpose is to install the wheels 33X12.5 so that they do not cling to any part of the car even at the maximum suspension strokes and angles of rotation of the front wheels. The first wheels I selected with 8.5JX15 ET -28 was perfect. Wheels 33X12.5 behaved in the arches as it was conceived (although it should be noted that I already had a 2″ rear suspension elevator). I only had to cut the corners of the plastic bumper apron (1 cm on each side) a little. During the planned bulkhead of the front suspension, I found that the torsos on my 4Runner were tightened very slightly. After assembling the suspension and the average (!!!!! Attention, NOT the maximum (!!!!) torsional tightening, I found that the volume of the wheel arch has increased even more (this time by lifting the suspension to a normal level that did not sink), and I easily put the wheels there 35″. True, only to try. At the maximum stroke of the suspension, the 35 would necessarily cling to the arches. The load on the transmission with the 35’s is already noticeably greater than with the 33’s. And reception in the city is noticeably dropping, and fuel consumption is increasing. It should be noted that the torsions for the front suspension elevator should not be tightened too much, as it has a negative impact on the controllability, range of suspension operation, driving comfort, as well as on the strength of the torsions themselves with bolts of their fastening and tightening.
For the elevator suspension, there is a mass of accessories – as individual elements (springs, springs, shock absorbers), and the whole sets. The picture to the left shows a set of SuperLift for IFS family models from 1988 to 1996. On the picture to the right – a set for complete bridge models. Also, a large number of suspension elements (spring earrings, and much more) produces OLD MAN EMU (ARB). It should be noted that such kits – pleasure is not cheap. The starting price of the manufacturer for a minimum configuration is usually about $ 400.
There are much simpler and cheaper ways to elevator suspension. For example, for an elevator, rear spring suspension can be used longer springs or spacers for the original springs. (Well branded kits always include turning the bridge to normalize the working angles of the Cardan shaft). For spring suspension, one effective and easy way to the elevator is to use SPOA (SOA) – springs over axles. However, on the spring models of the family under consideration, this type of installation springs (SPOA) is used by the manufacturer standard (as standard on UAZ). In addition, in a spring front suspension of cars of the family is commonly used shackle reversal – that is, the earring is located behind the bridge. There are also spacers for fixing springs and earrings (or longer earrings). When your elevator the suspension, you should keep in mind the Cardan corners, the angles of a longitudinal inclination of the stand, and many other parameters.
Marlin Crawler – a small American tuning office, offers a whale for a transfer case with a standard High gear 1:1 and reduced from 2.88 to 4.7:1 Low gear. For those who do not have enough of this gear ratio, there is a special adapter to install an additional reduction gearbox. In this case, both used boxes – a reducing unit of the usual factory transfer case, which can be purchased on disassembly (see pictures on the right). If your car does not have a rigid inter wheel lock and you are not satisfied with the standard Toyota friction-based LSD differential – do not worry. The 4Runner family has a good selection of optional differentials from ARB and Tractech. These are both LSD (limited slip diff) differentials and differentials with hard manual or automatic locking. Tractech produces an excellent torque-sensitive LSD differential – the Detroit TRUE TRAC (shown on the left). Catalog numbers for 2nd generation model c ADD-IFS – Front 911A342 Rear 913A321. It is necessary to determine the exact number for a particular model from the manufacturer’s catalog. The same company produces automatic locks Detroit Locker, Detroit E-Z Locker, Detroit Gearless Locker. At the end of 2002, Tractech launched a new LSD torque-sensitive differential equipped with a hard drive lock. ARB produces differentials with rigid mechanical interlock (diagram on the right). When preparing an off-road vehicle for operation in severe conditions, you should remember about ventilation of axle units, gearboxes, RC. It is desirable to bring the ventilation to the Shnorhel level. This is very good when using brake tubes and reinforced hoses. In this case, do not withdraw ventilation into the air intake of the engine, as there is a discharge. Also do not withdraw ventilation into the cabin – will smell a lot of oil carbon monoxide.
In addition to all the above, the models under consideration are produced a large number of additional accessories such as corkscrews, low resistance air filters, TRD Turbo blowers, fuel filters, additional fuel tanks, bumpers.
